Adultification bias occurs when children and young people are perceived or treated as more mature, resilient, or responsible than they are. This bias can affect any child, but research shows it disproportionately impacts Black children, who are often denied the same presumption of innocence, care, and protection afforded to their peers.
This session explores how adultification has developed over time and how it manifests in family, community, and professional contexts. It examines how intersecting factors such as race, gender, class, and disability shape children’s experiences of adultification and how these biases continue to influence safeguarding responses today.
You will learn to:
- Define adultification bias and understand its historical, cultural, and systemic roots
- Explore how adultification manifests across family, community, and professional settings
- Reflect on its impact on children’s identity, visibility, and access to protection
- Identify practical strategies to recognise, challenge, and disrupt adultification in assessment and response
