The session will support CYP practitioners to become more aware of the risk considerations, support options and best practice guidance to enable practitioners to respond effectively and lawfully.

This session will act as a useful follow up for practitioners that have attended generic Group C training, and who have identified they would benefit from undertaking additional CPD in relation to CYP and the MCA, Gillick competence, Fraser guidelines etc.

Target Audience:

 This course is suitable for practitioners who have direct responsibility for safeguarding young people:

  • Who have an assessing role that’s linked to the safeguarding process,

and/or

  • Who are operating at a level where they give advice about safeguarding to others

 Learning Outcomes:

  1. Brief overview of the legislation relevant to CYP practitioners for decision making such as Gillick competency, Fraser guidelines, human rights, The European Convention on the Rights of the Child, SS&W Act and MCA.
  2. Describe the possible application of the MCA for 16 years + in safeguarding, undertaking a 3 stage capacity assessment and if individual lacks capacity how to proceed in best interests.
  3. Explain executive dysfunction and mental capacity assessment for CYP practitioners working with young people who have Autism or ADHD, in relation to safeguarding decisions they need to make.
  4. Consider the need for special limitations on a young person’s liberty due to safeguarding concerns.
