Target Group

Practitioners who work regularly with children and families where there may be concerns about neglect. This course is aimed primarily at Group C staff (2023 National Safeguarding Training Framework), however other staff (including Group B) who feel they would benefit from increasing their knowledge and upskilling in relation to this topic are encouraged to apply, providing they have previously attended the Gwent Safeguarding Group B level or higher.

Learning Programme Structure

This Learning Programme has two number of elements:

Part One – An Introduction to working with Neglect, delivered via SWAY (approx.1 hour to complete). This element ends with a mandatory knowledge checker, satisfactory completion of the knowledge checker is a pre-requisite to accessing Part Two. This part of the programme will be sent to learners in advance to complete in their own time, but it must be completed in advance of the date of the facilitated session (a deadline will be outlined in the accompanying email).

Part Two – Working with Neglect – Practice Challenges and Tools, delivered via a facilitated session, online OR face to face (approx. 4 hours).

This Learning Programme has been designed to complement (and be used in conjunction with) the Gwent Safeguarding Children and Adult at Risk: Neglect Guidance and Toolkit (when available)

Learning Outcomes (Part 1 & 2 combined):

Following completing the neglect programme learners will:

  • Understand definitions and key terms.
  • Understand the impact and consequences of neglect.
  • Be able to distinguish between parenting aspects and other contributory factors.
  • Gain enhanced knowledge of signs to look for, and children that are particularly vulnerable.
  • Gain enhanced knowledge of a range of key issues for practice (including messages for practice emerging from Child Practice Reviews).
  • Be able to interpret key legislation, processes etc.
  • Be upskilled in relation to application/ use of relevant assessment tools.
  • Understand the significance of professional curiosity, reflective practice etc.
  • Increased confidence around dealing with cases of childhood neglect.

Pre-requisites

Completion of the Safeguarding Children Training (or equivalent Group B programme).

Completion of the Part One Knowledge Check is mandatory, to access Part 2 Facilitated Session (see above for details).
